Our Commitments
Our journey is about driving innovation, creating value in areas of unmet medical need and engaging with communities and society to change lives for the better – for humans and animals.
At Boehringer Ingelheim, “Sustainable Development – For Generations” is about a journey. One that started in 1885 and one that we hope, and believe, will never end. Because Boehringer Ingelheim will always strive to be better: develop better therapies, enable better health care solutions and contribute to a better world. Not just now or for the next generation, but for all generations to come. Because being a family business is about family. And we consider our employees, patients, communities and business partners all to be part of that family.
Our story is one about driving innovation and creating value in areas of unmet medical need. It is also about thinking long term, considering the bigger picture when we make decisions and enabling a business model that benefits everyone involved. We exist to change lives for the better. For our patients, humans and animals alike. For our society and the communities we engage in. For our planet, on which we are dependent and the place we call home.
For generations, our commitment has not only been to improve health, it’s more than this, we aspire to transform lives. Boehringer Ingelheim used what we learned through the global pandemic to reassess our sustainable development approach, as another milestone in our journey. Never before has it become so obvious how imperative a holistic approach is to address the intertwined connection between humans, animals and the environment. We believe this is where Boehringer Ingelheim is unique and where we can create a real contribution towards a healthier and more sustainable future.
This is why we want to ensure transparency on our 2030 commitments, such as expanding access to healthcare for an additional 50 million people. Moreover, we will be investing EUR 35 billion in health innovation to tackle non-communicable diseases and an additional EUR 250 million in partnerships to combat emerging infectious diseases. Through our flagship initiative “Making More Health”, we partner with Ashoka, the largest global network of social entrepreneurs, who enable changemakers. Our aim is to positively impact an additional 50 million people in vulnerable communities, through empowering our employees, partners and innovative social entrepreneurs. To mitigate the environmental impact of our growing business, we will become carbon neutral in our operations and halve our resource footprint across the value chain by 2030.
Another learning of the pandemic has been to be realistic with expectations. Which solutions can we as a company deliver, and which skills and know-how are better developed through joint creation or multi-stakeholder networks? While we believe in leading by example, our holistic approach also focuses on the value of collaboration, the integration of expertise through long-term partnerships and the development of innovative tools and technologies.
We strive to find better solutions to the health challenges of today and tomorrow, as well as improving health outcomes for all.
For our family, and yours.
