With its location in the Yamagata prefecture (Higashine), around 400 kilometers north of Tokyo, this site focuses on the production and packaging of human pharmaceuticals for the Japanese market. Boehringer Ingelheim has been active in Japan since 1955 and formed its own country affiliate in 1961. Meanwhile, the Yamagata site has been part of the company’s global production network since 1988. In that year, Boehringer Ingelheim opened a production facility there. Around 160 employees work at this site.

Over the years, this site has seen several updates, with new production facilities, to continuously advance and optimize on-site operations. As part of its commitment towards the environment, the Yamagata site is currently switching to a cogeneration energy system driven by liquid natural gas. Therefore, site-related CO2 emissions from energy consumption are expected to realize carbon neutrality by the end of 2024.
