Bethesda, Md. – August 3, 2017 – Veterinary students and researchers from 38 leading veterinary schools across North America, the Netherlands and France are gathering at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to discuss innovative animal health research and the future of veterinary medicine. The 2017 National Veterinary Scholars Symposium (NVSS), occurring August 3-6, 2017 and co-sponsored by Boehringer Ingelheim, is the premier veterinary student research conference.

The NVSS exposes first- and second-year veterinary students to biomedical research that has the potential to influence the future path of global animal health and disease prevention. Presentations and panel discussions – from academia, government, private research institutions and industry – focus on today’s relevant research themes of neuroscience, global health, conservation medicine, and comparative oncology.

Veterinary students attending the NVSS also will present their findings from summer biomedical research projects conducted as part of the Boehringer Ingelheim Veterinary Scholars Program (BIVSP). Since 2000, more than 2,500 veterinary students sponsored by the company have conducted and presented research findings, helping them prepare for a range of veterinary careers.

“So many major breakthroughs in animal health stem from novel and well-executed scientific research; Boehringer Ingelheim believes that by supporting today’s veterinary students, we can help enable future industry advancements,” said Dr. Fabian Kausche, Head of Global Research and Development, Boehringer Ingelheim’s Animal Health Business Unit. “We are delighted to introduce students to real-world research initiatives that often serve as the springboard for lifelong careers in veterinary science and research.”

At the NVSS, Boehringer Ingelheim will present awards to one graduate student and one undergraduate student for exemplary research projects:

  • 2017 Boehringer Ingelheim Veterinary Graduate Award: To be presented to Dr. Anna Massie, currently a resident in small animal surgery at University of California-Davis, for her work in the evaluation of bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) as a treatment in chronic non-union fractures in dogs.
  • 2017 Boehringer Ingelheim Veterinary Research Scholar Award: To be presented to Ann DiPastina, a veterinary student at Michigan State University. DiPastina conducted and is presenting her research project on optimizing antimicrobial use for mastitis on U.S. dairy farms.
