The Power of Our People

Diversity & Inclusion is an integral part of Boehringer Ingelheim's identity; a key element of our culture and embedded in the MORE POTENTIAL pillar of our Sustainable Development – For Generations framework. Through our core values of empathy, respect, passion and trust we nurture a diverse, collaborative, open and inclusive environment which is key to innovation, value creation and sustainable growth.

Diversity is the representation of varied collective and individual identities - this includes aspects such as age, gender, gender identity, nationality, sexual orientation, work experience, education, or way of thinking. Inclusion is actively seeking the contribution and participation of all our people; ensuring all feel valued and heard, creating a sense of belonging. Equity seeks to remove the barriers to inclusion to ensure everyone can fully participate in the work environment, is treated fairly, and has access to information and resources.  Equity seeks to deliver parity for all.

We conduct ourselves with inclusion. According to our Global Code of Conduct, we treat each other with fairness and dignity at all times and stand firmly against any form of discrimination or harassment. We respect and value the diverse individual characteristics, the different perspectives, and distinctive backgrounds of our people. We uphold human rights and international labor standards around the globe.

To honor our commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, we will work to reduce inequalities and strengthen diversity and belonging in our company. Our commitment will drive our work with business partners along the value chain. Furthermore, we are devoted to the areas of human rights and ethics, including application of the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights. Our commitment goes beyond the usual HR practices, processes, and systems into the core business.

At Boehringer Ingelheim, Diversity and Inclusion is not an extra, it is fixed in all decisions, no matter if they concern the patients, the marketplace with customers or all employees and their commitment to the company’s vision and values. Therefore, we must excel in three action fields: Our People, Our Behaviors and Our Work & Environment.

Our People

Boehringer Ingelheim strives for a diverse workforce that reflects our patients, customers and partners and all stakeholders and communities with whom we interact. We aim to attract a diverse array of talent, decrease workforce under-representation, and ensure our leadership and teams around the world represent our mission to infuse Diversity & Inclusion in all that we do. To achieve this, we act inclusively within our people processes, approaches and decision making and have several initiatives within, for example, sponsoring and mentoring, growth and development and parameters in place to orient ourselves successfully.

Our Behaviours

We are inclusive through living our values, appreciating, and hearing our people and creating a sense of belonging. This setting provides the opportunity for all to realize their full potential. Therefore, we are committed to our core values and a speak up culture, skill managers in inclusive leadership, offer unconscious bias training for our employees and encourage Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) and networks, that promote inclusion in our company culture and business.

Our Work & Environment

We strive for our people and business practices, systems, and processes as well as our working environment to be inclusive and with broad-based engagement of leaders who provide inclusive experiences and fair opportunities. In support of this mission, an active and engaged team of D&I Advocators around the world helps to implement and drive global and local Diversity & Inclusion activities and actions.
