A colleague of mine said, you have to meet this patient because,

you know, you see the effect of the work you're doing.

And I've met cancer patients on compounds that I've worked on.

She had a big tumour, she couldn't walk anymore.

And she was crying.

She was crying because she was able to walk again.

And it was just amazing.

And if you think about what we can do  

when we are successful in industry, we can touch somebody's life.

And that is so nice.

I go to work for science and innovation.

Science is thinking about the problems in health.

And it can be human health. It can be animal health.

Solving these together as part of a team,

bringing solutions to the markets five, ten years down the road.

That is what I go to work for every single day.

We basically are a very funny family because we are all in medical sciences.

And that means that we discuss medical challenges, we discuss scientific

challenges, we challenge each other about problems that we're working on.

Why someone wants to work in research and innovation is, the job is challenging.

You answer questions which haven't been answered before.

If you're able to solve some of those questions,

you're going to have an impact later on.

Is there anything nicer than that? For me there is not.

Why I'm still at Boehringer? It's fun.

If I could achieve anything in my job, it's if they would say, it's

great to be working together with Eric, I would have a fantastic day.

And if at the end of the career I could look back

and that some of the work that I've done

has resulted in new medications coming to the market,

I think that's the best.
