Chronic Kidney Disease

One in 3 adults in the U.S. are at risk for developing chronic kidney disease (CKD) – a debilitating condition caused by progressive damage to the kidneys that prevents them from working as well as they should. CKD affects an estimated 37 million people in the U.S. and can also double a person’s risk for hospitalization, which accounts for 35-55% of total healthcare costs for this population.

Nine out of 10 adults with CKD aren’t aware of their condition, because many people do not experience symptoms. Given the intrinsic link between the renal, cardio and metabolic systems, adults living with these conditions are at increased risk for developing CKD. In fact, approximately 1 in 3 people with diabetes has CKD. The good news is that regular testing of those at increased risk can help with earlier diagnosis. At Boehringer Ingelheim, we are committed to raising awareness of the importance of early testing for CKD and, through research, addressing the significant need in CKD to help reduce the risk of kidney disease progression.
