Volunteering to Strengthen the Human-Animal Bond
Meet Valentine Williams – one of our associate directors for our veterinary pharma business. She supports New Horizon Therapeutic Riding Center, a non-profit that helps people of all ages with physical and mental disabilities through horse therapy. Valentine has volunteered in various horse programs serving kids and the disabled for more than 15 years.
We asked Valentine a few questions about her interest in volunteering and what encourages her to give back. Here’s what she shared.
Why do you volunteer?
My faith plays a big role in my decision to volunteer. I believe we are all meant to do something greater than ourselves. It’s important to be a valuable member of society by helping others through our talents, financial support, and most of all compassion.
Can you share a memorable experience from your time volunteering?
After years of volunteering, I took ownership and responsibility of a four-year-old thoroughbred cross mare that the trainers and most people did not get along well with. Lucky for us, the mare and my daughter formed a bond almost immediately. It’s been incredibly rewarding to see how this relationship has shaped my daughter’s life and seeing them together really does speak to the power of the human-animal bond. I appreciate the positive impact therapy horses have in our community – whether it’s helping someone with a specific illness or an opportunity for young kids – and even adults suffering from various traumatic events – to donate their time reading to miniature horses or grooming these majestic creatures.
Does your volunteer work connect with your role at Boehringer Ingelheim?
Absolutely. I’m a veterinarian and we are an animal health company. Caring for the animals that care for people is our primary role. I’m proud to be a part of strengthening the human-animal bond!
