Ways we’re protecting the planet
Our family-owned company has developed products that have helped keep humans and animals healthy since 1885. Part of this commitment includes our global sustainability strategy: “Sustainable Development for Generations” (SD4G). This journey originates from the core of who we are and what we strive to do and incorporates initiatives that evolve into more ambitious goals to significantly increase our impact on health, society, and our planet.
Here are a few examples of the sustainability practices we’ve put in place to protect the planet and do our part for a more sustainable tomorrow.
-
‘MoreGreen’ Program: We started this program to reduce our overall energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions by 20 percent by 2020. Our team surpassed this goal in 2020 reducing emissions by 30 percent at the facility! We also invested about $5 million in nearly 80 energy reduction projects at the site.
We’re following in the footsteps of our animal health site in Gainesville, Georgia – our first manufacturing site in the U.S. to receive a carbon neutral certification. -
Renewable Energy: More than 95 percent of the electricity used on site is from renewable sources, like hydropower. Hydropower is good for the environment because it’s generated by water flow and does not release any emissions to the atmosphere. We’re not the only site to use renewable energy though!
Wind energy also now provides all the electricity used at our animal health site in St. Joseph, Missouri. -
Solar Panels: We have a solar farm that provides electricity to the Apple Blossom Day Care Center, operated by KinderCare Education LLC. This reduces our site’s greenhouse gas emissions.
-
Plastic Use and Composting: We’ve eliminated all single-use plastics like forks, knives, spoons, and to-go containers at our cafeteria. Our staff also composts all appropriate food items from the cafeteria to reduce waste going to landfills.
-
Lighting: We’ve replaced more than 20,000 fluorescent lighting fixtures with LED lights. The facility also has motion sensing and automation technology to reduce our energy consumption.
-
Pollinator Gardens: We’ve planted several pollinator gardens in our building courtyards to provide a habitat for important species, like bees, butterflies, and birds. The gardens are also beneficial to our employees’ wellbeing and health!
-
Conserving Green Space: We’ve conserved a large part of our 300-acre campus to protect the natural habitat and wildlife that live in this area.
-
Green Chemistry: As a pharmaceutical company, we aim to focus on innovative design and development of products that help keep animals and people healthy without having major impacts on the planet.
To do this, we follow processes that minimize ecological footprint and hazards, maximize efficiencies, and improve the economic impact of medicine over its lifecycle.
Our employees can also join our ‘More Green’ Team. Those who are passionate about sustainability and protecting the environment come together to develop initiatives that promote a ‘green’ culture within our company.
Being ‘Greener’ in the future
- Continue prioritizing initiatives in our SD4G strategy and our contribution to the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
- Enhance our offsite and onsite requirements for ‘green’ meetings. These requirements focus on using mass transit and hotels with strong sustainable programs, using technology in place of paper, and eliminating plastics at meals and breaks.
- Start transforming our executive and sales force fleet to electric vehicles to reduce pollution and improve air quality.
