The 70-20-10 approach 

Boehringer Ingelheim follows the 70-20-10 approach, where most of the learning takes place in your daily work (70%) and through feedback from others (20%). This creates an environment where you can drive your own development and growth. The remaining 10% comes from formal training, development programs and courses. 

Within our learning landscape, we provide you with specific, solutions, tailored to the nature of your job (e.g. employee, manager, etc.), the content that’s relevant to you (e.g. functional or extra-functional skill building, leadership development, etc.), the most effective methodology for you (e.g. classroom, experiential, etc.), your point of need (e.g. on the job, off the job, near the job) and your geography (e.g. global, local, regional, etc.).

Mentoring, coaching and feedback 

There is no better resource for learning about how a company operates than the people who work there – so we set great store by the systems we use to do that.  

One-to-one mentoring is a great way to transfer expert knowledge in fine detail, enabling the next generation of specialists to find out how it’s really done. We also enjoy great success with reverse mentoring, cascading knowledge back up the generations from our digital natives to their analogue seniors. 

When an employee has a specific issue to work through, coaching can support them as they reflect on their experiences, identify the problem, and find a better way of doing things. 

And because we can all learn from each other, wherever we are in our careers, we are committed to 360° feedback – not as a performance assessment tool but as a confidential resource for individual development. 

Our academies 

Boehringer Ingelheim’s Functional Academies are the backbone of our formal learning: carefully designed learning systems in specific fields available to any employee who wants to upskill, like our University of Medicine Excellence, our Data Science Academy, Language or Digital Workplace academies and others. 

Further qualification programs 

We encourage our employees to earn further qualifications via external programs. We offer access to MBAs, postdoctoral programs (see below), and other relevant courses from a range of selected universities and business schools, leading to diplomas and further academic degrees.
