Advocating for More Patient-Centered Mental Health Care

In June 2022, our government affairs and public policy team participated in a Women in Government conference to urge legislators to take action in support of more tailored mental health care. For this event, we focused our advocacy efforts on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and brought attention to the impact this condition has on people living with it.

According to the National Center for PTSD, this disorder is more likely to affect women than men at some point in their lives. To help address common unmet medical needs, we discussed opportunities for government stakeholders to help enact change in mental health care, including:

  1. Investing in patient care with more research and better access.
  2. Prioritizing mental health coverage as much as physical health.
  3. Tailoring care to different needs of patients as well as the complexity and uniqueness of their condition.

During the conference a patient, Athena, also candidly shared her experience being diagnosed and living with PTSD. It’s people like Athena, who inspire us to do more for the communities we serve by encouraging change in public policy surrounding mental health.

While we push for more change, our research links behavior to the underlying neurobiology to develop targeted therapies. Our aim is to redefine mental health to enable people to thrive today and for generations to come. Learn more about our research.
