Innovation in CNS Disease Research

Mental illnesses are complex and variable by nature due to the neurochemical, genetic, and environmental factors that play a part in their development. This variability is present not just across different mental illnesses, but even within the same condition.  For example, different patients with depression may have distinct sets of symptoms and will still receive the same diagnosis and same medication. For this reason, there is a high need for new mental health treatments and approaches that are tailored more specifically to a patient’s unique needs. Yet all too often, current treatments offer a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach which is not sufficient for patients in reality, as there are simply not enough treatments that address the most burdensome symptoms.

Our approach

At Boehringer Ingelheim, we aspire to transform mental health by placing an individual’s specific needs at the center. Our research approach, known as Precision Psychiatry, uses a deep understanding of the underlying neurobiology to develop treatment approaches that target specific symptoms in people living with mental illness.  Our efforts go beyond pharmacologic interventions because we recognize that the needs of people living with mental health conditions are complex and highly individualized.  We believe the future of care for people with mental illnesses will often involve a combination of treatment modalities that could include pharmacotherapies, behavioral therapies, psychosocial interventions, community support, and prescription digital therapeutics, to achieve more integrated and tailored solutions that enable better outcomes.

Our research focus

We have an innovative pipeline of assets developed in-house or in partnership with other companies. We are aiming to develop therapies that help to treat the symptoms of serious mental illnesses that are not sufficiently addressed by current options and are impacting the everyday life of people living with these conditions. Our research is currently focused on investigating ways to address:

  • Cognitive symptoms of schizophrenia
  • Negative symptoms of schizophrenia
  • Major depressive disorder

We know that making our ambition a reality is a long-term journey that’s only possible through a collaborative approach. That’s why we’re working with a variety of partners who share our vision. Together, we’re championing every mind for generations.
