Improving Access to Healthcare

According to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, nearly half of the world's population lacks access to basic health care. A fact inextricably linked to poverty, inequality, unequal distribution and lack of resources. At Boehringer Ingelheim, access to breakthrough therapies and healthcare solutions is central to our business and values. As part of our More Health sustainability pillar, the Access to Healthcare initiative drives our ambition to serve humanity by realizing a healthier future for all.

The Access to Healthcare initiative is part of our Sustainable Development - For Generations strategy and aims to improve the lives of millions of people by focusing on human and animal health. Through this initiative, we aim to improve the health situation in disadvantaged communities, starting with the availability of and access to safe, high-quality and effective prevention and treatment.

Our efforts are focused on areas of intervention where Boehringer Ingelheim has the expertise and resources to both improve the health and well-being of people and benefit society as a whole. These include addressing health care disparities, product donations and initiatives that improve the reach and quality of treatments, care and education.

Boehringer Ingelheim thus continues to invest in a number of More Health projects and initiatives that reflect the diversity of our patients, patients and partnerships. Significant milestones have already been achieved in recent years:

  • Patient assistance programs and product donations reached over 150,000 people in 77 countries on all continents.
  • The support of free clinics in several countries, where Boehringer Ingelheim employees are also involved as doctors, nurses and translators.
  • The Angels initiative helped make 5,400 clinics "stroke-ready", providing 8.6 million patients with tangibly improved stroke care
  • The Kuza Afya program in Kenya screened approximately 79,000 people for hypertension and diabetes, trained more than 500 healthcare professionals, and created a pathway to treatment for more than 5,000 previously unserved patients.
  • Together with PharmAccess, a new initiative launched in Kenya as part of the "In Reach Africa" program. This uses mobile technology to raise awareness of hypertension and diabetes in communities and break down barriers to accessing care.
  • Efforts to improve access to healthcare in economically depressed regions continued under the UN Defeat-NCD Partnership.
  • The Integrated NCD Care Model supports access to cardiovascular disease screening, diagnosis and treatment for low-income patients in sub-Saharan Africa.
  • The Pathways Fund in Canada reaches over 20,000 people in Indigenous communities, where it is addressing the over prevalence of certain non-communicable diseases.
  • The Last Mile initiative, which spans six countries in sub-Saharan Africa, has trained 7,000 smallholder farmers to use their access to health solutions, vaccines and treatment options to improve the health and productivity of their livestock.
  • The launch of a pilot program in partnership with the World Organization of Animal Health that supports rabies elimination through donations of animal vaccine and identification collars for dogs.
